Do you remember last week’s blog, when I described how much I enjoyed seeing us do so well for once ? Well, I’m afraid to say the “after party” wasn’t so good ! I left A13 Annie’s about 12.15 with her sound asleep in bed and returned to my car to head home, opened the doors, put the key in the ignition and …. NOTHING ! It seemed like I had a dead battery, but there had been no warning signs at all and the “Neil-mobile” isn’t an old banger so I wasn’t sure what had happened. I got straight onto my breakdown service as my car knowledge is well below average when it comes to what goes on under the bonnet and an nice lady took my call, but as gently as was possible, broke the news that they were very busy and the wait could be over THREE HOURS !!!
Taking a deep breath, Imade sure I had the key to the G/Fs place and made myself comfy again on the sofa while text after text came in updating me apologetically (and just about stopping me from falling fast asleep and missing my man !) In the end a very nice chap turned up at 4.20am and confirmed it was indeed a dead battery -my car is actually 8 years old and it seems I had possibly helped take a couple of years off the normal ten life expectancy by spending several hours in recent years, sitting in dark car parks waiting for my son to finish football training reading the paper with the interior light on, listening to CDs !!
Despite the inconvenience of the situation and the lateness of the hour, me and my new best buddy had a good little chat while he replaced the battery and ran his checks … and suddenly it was 5am and we were in broad daylight ! I am never out of bed before 8am at the absolute earliest and had no idea that it got light so early in the day ! It also meant I had the surreal and rare experience of seeing the sun appear “out of the ground” near Basildon as I made my way home along a deserted A13, but even though it was clear daylight when I finally got home, boy did I sleep well that Sunday morning !
Maybe you have had a brand new experience in your life as an “Old Git” like me – possibly swimming with dolphins or riding in a hot air balloon ??
