Neil Gits To The Dentist

19th March 2023
Posted by Neil Matthew

It’s shocking to admit but I haven’t sat in a dentist’s chair for years ! I took Nathan to a surgery in Billericay a couple of times while he was still at school and as pleasant as the people were there, nothing about the environment made we want to rush to book in for a check up myself. As a confirmed technophobe, I immediately felt out of my comfort zone having to sign stuff on what looked like a green “Etch-a-Sketch” screen using something resembling a bald cotton bud ! The visits succesfully resolved my son’s problems, but I am glad it wasn’t me receiving treatment ….

Fast forward to last Wednesday and I was required for chauffering duties to take “A13 Annie” to her local dentist as she needed to have a tooth removed and wasn’t sure if she’d be fit to drive after 45 minutes of treatment under anesthetic. My own visits for dental work are mainly of having to sit for ages in a bland room, listening to the sound of drills instilling total fear from within the two ‘operating theatres’ down the corridor with THAT sickly, clinical smell wafting through the air as you wait nervously for your turn. But hers was a much nicer place, occupying what used to be a little cottage many years ago, no smells, no noise and with everyone present quite relaxed as patiently read my football newspaper sat in a comfy chair, all alone just round the corner from reception.

I still felt no urge to make an appointment though ! Ann emerged quite happy (though that might have been the drugs !) merrily talking gibberish with a numb mouth, but missing one painful toooth and thankfully not dribbling in the passeneger seat of my car. I forgot to ask what, if any, nice music they played in there whilst her dentist worked his magic, but I would recommend at least an hour of soothing soul music from the 70s & 80s to anyone on edge on a Monday – dentist present or not … and of course you can hear two terrific hours worth of that genre on my show LIVE show from 7-9pm weekly !
