Neil Gits To The Finales

6th March 2021
Posted by Neil Matthew

What a difference a year makes ! Due to my radical change in lifestyle, I have gone from being someone who hardly ever watched TV unless it involved football or music (plus my “guilty pleasure” of Coronation Street !) to being something of an authority on various aspects of small screen entertainment. I have been working my way through several hours worth of telly almost every night since last March – dramas, documentaries, comedies and films too – and in some of the series I’ve binged on, following the characters has been almost a replacement for meeting up with friends down the pub or catching up with mates at footy.

So last week was quite “emotional” (yes, I know it’s not real but …) when two of the big shows I’ve been engrossed in almost for the whole of the past year finally unveiled their last episodes to me within 24 hours. I can’t praise “The Marvellous Mrs Maisel” enough – the comedy, the sets, the fun, the colours, some brilliant one-liners and of course a great soundtrack throughout, one song from which I even played on my show recently ! “Cold Feet” has been real rollercoaster ride throughout all nine series – comedy & tragedy and all life’s other major & minor occurences in between, all set in Magnificent Manchester too, which is how I was drawn towards it as my family originate from Bury just 12 miles away (hence the Corrie obsession!) but I have to say it has knocked “The Street” into a cobbled cul-de-sac this last 12 months ! I do hope both programmes are back with a new series each in the future, but who knows ?

I could go on and on (I am also on the last series now of at least four other long runners!) but first and foremost I am a music man and while the gogglebox has helped keep me sane(ish !) from Tuesday to Sunday, Monday is all about those wonderful two hours of soul, jazz-funk & disco tunes I share with you on air each week at Gateway. This evening’s Saturday night repeat play is all set to roll at 5pm today, but if you missed it, head for “Listen Again” and enjoy it whenever you can from there. Right now back to the TV I think !!
