Neil Gits To Thorpe Park

11th May 2024
Posted by Neil Matthew

I am definitely too old to be going on any rides at a big theme park – I didn’t enjoy them when I was younger anyway, just not my thing ! – and Nathan is certainly too old be taken for a day out at such a place by me now. We had numerous days out at Adventure Island in Southend when he was at school and he loved it there, but now he is at University you are more likely to see him taking his other 20/21 year old student mates in his car to Alton Towers … no dads allowed !!

Recently I have been very busy with seasonal delivery work for an old school friend which takes me out and about all round the M25 and after some very rainy trips out crawling on and off the motorway amidst all the spray & drizzle, my three days this week have been quite glorious. A lot of the routes have become quite familiar to me over the years and one annual trip takes me close to Thorpe Park near Staines but usually I just see the entrance to the car park. This year I found myself approaching my destination close by using a different route, coming in off the M25 using the M3 and got to see some of the huge roller-coasters and other scary ‘instruments of torture’ reaching high up to the sky. Nobody was riding as I passed but I bet they will be busy today !

I also recalled that the bawdy teen movie “The Inbetweeners” was filmed in part there, having had to sit through that a couple of times with said young son ! Several members of the cast of the film & TV series have popped up since in various areas of my recent telly watching that always put a smile on my face, but I am still not remotely tempted to follow in their footsteps and venture inside such a place to discover possible new and exciting experiences – I get my weekly buzz from playing top tunes on the radio for you, which you can hear on the ‘Repeat Play’ today at 5pm or via the “Listen Again” at a more convenient time of your choice ….
