Neil Gits Under The Viaduct

13th September 2020
Posted by Neil Matthew

I am very aware that sometimes this becomes more of a Travel Blog than a Soul Blog, but I had such a brilliant road trip this week it has put me in a really good mood, which hopefully will last until I am back in the studio for my next live show on Monday at 7pm ! My love of The Peak District is common knowledge, but I really should have explored The Yorkshire Dales more on my travels, so this week I went a little way to putting that right, taking advantage of one of many good hotel room deals at the moment to go a bit further north than my frequent “Wednesday Wanders”…

During my many hours of telly viewing this year, The Ribblehead Railway Viaduct cropped up twice in series I was following (it also features in the Harry Potter films) and when it appeared once again in something else I saw on screen, I thought “I have GOT to go there!” . I packed all my usual “Big Day Out” bits (plus a clean pair of pants & socks and a toothbrush) and planned a route which took in a few other places that have caught my eye recently – Richmond, Catterick, Hawes, Bolton Castle & Malham Cove and to cut a long but hugely enjoyable story short, boy was it worth it ! Amazing scenery, perfect weather (not a drop of rain in two days !) and some tasty food grabbed en route, all accompanied of course by some top tunes being played in the Neil-mobile !!

Reaching Ribblehead Viaduct was of course the highlight for me and finding myself finally standing underneath one of those famous arches was a real “Wow! Here I am !” moment. If you are on Facebook, you should be able to see all my photos posted up by the end of the week – once I have completed a marathon editing and labelling session ! Meanwhile I have just ordered the DVD of the 2016 TV series “Jericho” which is based on the story of the people worked on its construction and lived in shanty towns at the site back in the late 19th century !

Anyway, make sure you tune in to “The Old Gits Soul Show” this week and see if I can get through the two hours of soul, jazz-funk and disco tunes from he 70s 80s & beyond without mentioning it … lol
