Neil Gits Walking

Last week’s blog featured “Boots” – and funnily enough, so does this one, but not the retail company this time, the sort you wear on your feet ! Back in the 90s, I took on some occasional part-time work to boost my diminishing funds and was required to buy a pair of steel toe capped boots. They cost about £20 and at that time I had about £22 in my bank account !! But they served me well and I got work, earned money and within a couple of years was back on track again financially.

Fast forward to October 2020 and I was still wearing them – but only for going to watch Nathan play football on a Sunday in rain and mud (the alternative was a hugely uncomfortable old pair of wellies !) I was aware this autumn that on wet days my feet were feeling a little dampness in my socks, but it was only when I trudged away from a heavy defeat back across a sodden field to the car park and caught my right foot on something that I realized 25 years of good serivce had finally come to an end – half of the sole of one of the boots completely fell off !! I do like to get good wear out of my clothes and not being at all fashion conscious, will persist with jeans, T-shirts, trousers and tops util it is totally impractical to do so … and thus that day had arrived for my trusty old work boots, espcially as the left foot one was probably about another 100 yards of walking away from suffering the same fate !

So, having had a surprisingly successful online clothes shop recently (see another recent blog …) I took the plunge and spent a good while scouring websites for some suitable replacements which would not only be perfect for standing on the touchline in (if Nathan ever gets playing again!) but would also be more than useful for wear on my now legendary “Wednesday Wanders” around the country with my camera, enabling me to venture further along coastlines and across coutryside than the battered faithful old trainers from 2009 that I have also clung on to for dear life !!

After a couple of trial runs “wearing them in” at home and in the car, I gave them a proper workout for an hour or so, striding out around the vast exopanse of Hylands Park in Chelmsford – all boxes ticked ! No sore feet, so damp toes, nice and warm & super comfy … the only problem at present was that not being a morning person, by the time I got back to the car it was starting to get a bit dark !! So until the lighter evenings return, I guess I will have to spend even more of the vast amounts of free time I have these days indoors at my PC with my USB turntable to hand, finding even more groovy tunes to share with you on my show ! Here’s the latest playlist …
