Whether it is a fresh coat of paint or a full room renovation, a makeover needs a lot of thought and planning to make sure we are happy with the final new look.

The pandemic has made us a nation of home fixers as 29% of us are doing more DIY jobs than before. However, it is not just choosing the colour of the walls, style of cupboards, or replacement electronics that we should be thinking about but also what we do with the bits we are getting rid of too.

he majority of people (93%) don’t hire companies that will take their DIY waste to be recycled. In fact, 12.9 million people admit to putting their DIY waste in domestic bins, which will then just end up in a landfill.

On average, we have three DIY jobs that are waiting to be completed in our homes and 20% of us are planning to get some home improvements done over the Easter holidays. 40% are planning a simple redecoration and 20% are plotting a full renovation of a room – that could be a lot of waste which 38% are just taking to the council tip.

Indeed, 54% of women say they are responsible for making sure the jobs get done but when asked who the job actually falls to in the household, husbands come out on top, according to research by HIPPO Waste.

Aston spoke to Linda Barker, TV presenter and interior designer to discuss the research and give her tips on the best way to improve our rooms and the environment at the same time.
