Listen: National Smile Month

17th May 2021

There might not have been much to smile about over the last 12 months, but the pandemic has put Brits’ grins front of mind according to new research from the Oral Health Foundation and Align Technology. Whether it’s been covered by a mask or reflected back at us on a video call, the positive display of emotion has had the opposite effect on many, leaving over a quarter (28%) of the nation feeling more self-conscious of their looks – and smile.

Video calls are the reason for one in ten (11%) UK adults, who now feel more embarrassed about their smile. The colour of their teeth was the main issue of concern for a third (33%), whereas a quarter (24%) are more aware of teeth misalignment.

For 40% of men, social situations including dates, meetings or video calls, left them feeling uncomfortable about their smile, in comparison to just 30% of women. As a result, two thirds (65%) now tend to avoid showing their teeth in photos to hide their smile, while 28% cover their mouth while they laugh.

Aston spoke to Dr Ben Atkins, president of the Oral Health Foundation to discuss more about the research and celebrate National Smile Month.
