Listen: traffic close to pre-pandemic levels

Traffic levels across the UK are back to pre-pandemic levels in some parts of the country, according to research published today.  The study, by Tarmac claims two thirds of us are making the same number of car journeys – or more – than we would have taken prior to lockdown.

The return of more cars to the roads has seen the return of traffic jams too.  A quarter of drivers questioned say they’ve sat stationary in traffic for up to 20 minutes per journey, since lockdown restrictions have been lifted.  Three quarters (73%) say their travel has been impacted by roadworks.

The government has promised £100-million for road repairs and improvements.

Despite these benefits, a report from the All Party Parliamentary Group for Highways states that widespread adoption of warm mix asphalt has so far failed to take place.

Aston spoke to Tony Sewell, president of the Institute of Asphalt Technology to discuss the research in further detail and also explain about trying to meet the net zero target by 2050.
