Fines imposed against individuals and businesses for littering and flytipping have been increased following a review by councillors.

Fixed penalty notices (FPNs) for littering were £100 discounted to £60 for those who pay within 14 days and £200 for the unauthorised deposit of waste reduced to £120 for those who pay within 10 days.

The Leisure and Environment Committee met last night (31 January) and agreed to increase the rate to £120 for littering discounted to £75 for early payment and £400 for the unauthorised deposit of waste, discounted to £250 for early payment.

Committee Chair Councillor Craig Rimmer said: “Flytipping and littering is a scourge on our neighbourhoods and town centres and we will not tolerate it.

“These increases reflect the seriousness of which we take these offences. The vast majority of our residents do the right thing – finding a litter bin or making proper arrangements for their household wastes and it is only right that there is a suitable deterrent for those who decide to litter or fly-tip.”
