Catch-up tuition widening class-gap for school children

Now that our children have been settled back at school for two weeks, the true extent of their academic regression over lockdown is coming to light.

Students from primary and secondary schools across England have been severely disrupted and this isn’t going unnoticed by teachers. Research by Eedi has shown that almost all teachers (98%) admitted their pupils were behind the place in the curriculum they would normally expect for the time of year. Overall, teachers said they had covered just 66% of their usual curriculum by July, putting pupils three months behind in their learning.

Although a £720m package has been announced to help pupils in England catch up, teachers’ unions say more needs to be done and parental involvement is vital.

Aston spoke to Craig Barton, teacher and author and Ben Caulfield who both of them are co-founders of Eedi to discuss the findings in further detail.
