Just when you thought becoming a new parent wasn’t daunting enough, 2020 threw in a global pandemic to turn the world upside-down.

Whilst traditionally mums and dads rely on the support network of friends and family when plunged into parenthood, the last year has forced loved ones apart. Being unable to enjoy the new addition they have all been waiting for with their nearest and dearest is a tough pill to swallow. New research shows the detrimental effect of social restrictions on new parent’s mental health.

A study by Portal from Facebook ahead of Mother’s Day reveals almost two thirds (64%) of new parents say the pandemic has highlighted the importance of supportive relationships when it comes to parenting. Over half (58%) of parents admit they are concerned about the lack of social interaction their child has experience, not being able to see loved ones in person (49%) and their own mental health (42%).

Aston spoke to Becca Maberly, pregnancy/post-natal expert and author to discuss to the findings and share tips on how we can feel more connected to distant friends and family this Mother’s Day.
