NHS ‘soup & shakes’ prescriptions 9 months on

Estimates suggest that more than 6 in 10 UK adults are now overweight or obese. This compares to just over 1 in 10 in 1993. The pandemic has shone a spotlight on the condition with 30% of Covid-19 hospitalisations in the UK directly attributable to the patient being overweight or obese.

As a result, Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that tackling obesity is the governments ‘number one property after the pandemic”. A series of measures have been introduced to for the governments “war against obesity” and they include stringent restrictions on the digital marketing of junk foods as well as the provision of soup and shake diets through the NHS in a bid to trim British waistlines.
