Hoardings showing how Basildon town centre’s new cinema and restaurants scheme will look are now installed with demolition work well underway.

The plans for East Square include the 10-screen cinema, which will include the biggest screen outside of Leicester Square, and six new restaurants.

The redevelopment, which also includes significant improvements to the look and feel of the square, will make the area a beacon for leisure and evening entertainment, creating a thriving night-time economy. The development is scheduled to be complete in spring 2021 and open to the public by autumn 2021.

Leader of Basildon Council and Chair of the Town Centre Revival Committee Councillor Gavin Callaghan said:

“Here is yet another reason to believe in Basildon. Seeing these hoardings up really illustrates the impact this exciting project is going to have on the town centre.

“East Square will be a vibrant development bringing more life into the town centre while creating a night-time economy and providing new jobs for local people.

“It’s crucial we evolve this town centre into a mixed use one that better serves the needs of our residents and traders. This scheme is a powerful reminder to other potential investors in our town centre that we are very much open for business.”
