New Platinum Jubilee trails have today launched on the popular Street Tag app to help residents learn about our borough’s royal connections, whilst getting active.

Street Tag is a free, interactive app which promotes physical activity in a fun accessible way by transforming streets, parks and outdoor space into a giant virtual playground. Residents gain virtual points every time they go for a walk, run or bike ride and move up their local leaderboard.

It has been running for 2 years in Basildon and has supported nearly 2,000 Basildon residents to walk, wheel, scoot or cycle in their local area.

A special virtual augmented reality trail has gone live on the app for the month of June, where users can take a step back in time to learn about royal connections to Basildon at each Jubilee trail location. Images to illustrate each point have been provided by Basildon Heritage.

Cllr Jeff Henry, Cabinet Member for Health, Wellbeing, Leisure, Arts and Culture, said:

“Street Tag offers local people a really fun opportunity to increase their physical activity while exploring our borough’s great outdoors, with the opportunity to win prizes at the same time.

“This new Jubilee trail will be a fantastic addition to the app, making your exercise time not only beneficial physically, but also culturally in terms of now being able to learn about our borough’s rich royal history. Give the app a try and see if it’s beneficial for you.”

Seun Oshinaike, Street Tag founder, added:

“We are looking forward to celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in Basildon community by helping users take a step back in history and learn about the borough’s Royal connections through the digital lens of the Street Tag app. The Jubilee trail will provide the residents with an experience that promises a mix of fun and knowledge sharing about their royal history.”

There are two routes on the trail, one starting and finishing at the Basildon Centre and taking you around the town, with another a route around Gloucester Park. It will be live for all of June, finishing at the end of the month.

Once you have the app, available to download at www.basildon.gov.uk/streettag or directly on the App Store or Google Play, go to the menu and select ‘Playgrounds’ and then ‘Monument Trail’ – clicking on ‘Basildon’. You’re then ready to get started on the trail.
