Shop local and tag three friends to take the social media challenge

Local residents are encouraged to shop local and support retailers – in Basildon, Pitsea, Wickford, Laindon and Billericay – in the run up to Christmas.

The aim behind the campaign is simple. Local people are asked to pick three shops or traders and post on social media about why they shop there and what’s great about them.

They can then tag three friends and ask them to do the same. It could be your favourite market trader, a local café, your favourite place to shop, an independent retailer or your hairdresser – so please do shout about why they are great and why everyone you know should use them.

This shop local campaign is part of the council’s wider efforts to help Basildon bounce back, through the regeneration of Basildon Town Centre. Over the last 16 months, residents and businesses have been consulted on ideas for what Basildon should like.

It is clear that the public wants to see a commitment to supporting the local economy, providing services for young people, council housing, improved office space, better shops, a vibrant retail offer, a night-time economy and safer town centre.

These plans are now starting to take shape, with a new digital campus opening in the New Year to 1,000 students, all well as a new 10 screen cinema, with the biggest screen outside Leicester Square, along with restaurants and cultural activities opening towards the end of 2021.

Leader of Basildon Council Councillor Gavin Callaghan said:

“We know just how much businesses have struggled this year, and we want to show our support for them all during these difficult times.

“Please do get involved in our Shop Local campaign, tell everyone about your favourite shops and traders and encourage your friends and family to do the same in the crucial period up until Christmas.

“At the same time, we have secured £600 million of private sector investment ready to be injected in improving Basildon, a once in lifetime opportunity to restore Basildon’s rightful place as the capital of South Essex.”

Please look out for the campaign on social media, whether that’s Facebook, Twitter or whatever you are on.

When you are out and about, remember to stay safe, maintain social distancing where possible and wear a face covering when indoors.
