The Conservative Party has retained control of Basildon Council in the 2023 local elections.

The party made one gain from the Wickford Independent group, with all other seats being held by incumbents.

Labour described the evening as a success, with their local leader Maryam Yaqub telling Gateway that the Conservative vote share was reducing.

Basildon Council leader Andrew Baggott told us that national political issues had affected the result across the borough.

The Conservatives now have 26 seats, winning 39% of the vote share. Labour won 29% vote share across the borough.

Turnout was low, at just 22% across Basildon.

All seats are contested next year, when the new boundary changes are introduced. A general election is also expected next year.
