Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, Robert Jenrick MP, visited Grays last Thursday (10 October) to hear more about exciting plans which will transform and revitalise the town centre.
During a walkabout the secretary of state saw exactly where improvements will be made to Grays High Street praising the breadth of ambition displayed by Thurrock Council.
Leader of Thurrock Council, Cllr Rob Gledhill, said:
“It was fantastic having the secretary of state visit Thurrock and see our vision for the whole of the Grays regeneration project. This will see investment in the region of £200million coming to Grays which will completely transform the retail and residential offer in the town centre.
“To be told that this is one of the most impressive town centre projects he has seen should help to make a difference in attracting investors not only for Grays but right across Thurrock including Tilbury and Purfleet. It’s yet another example of how Thurrock gets business, does business and means business.”
Communities and Local Government Secretary Rt Hon Robert Jenrick MP said:
“Grays is a town with an industrial and economic heritage to be proud of and we are backing them to thrive for years to come.
“We are serious about levelling up every part of the UK and with support from our £3.6 billion Towns Fund, these places are set to be at the heart of bold proposals to share prosperity across the regions.
“It has been exciting to hear about ambitious regeneration plans for the towns, which local government, businesses and community leaders are coming together to deliver. We are behind them every step of the way and I look forward to working with them as their proposals develop.”
Grays Town Centre is set to be transformed with redevelopment stretching from the Thameside Theatre to the very heart of the town. With £200million in investment already secured including an underpass at Grays Station, which has received £11million funding from the government through the Local Growth Fund. In addition, private investment is set to transform the State Cinema site and create a revitalised shopping centre, which owners NewRiver say could include a gym, a hotel and food retailer.
