Keeping Thurrock clean and green over Christmas

17th December 2019
Posted by Johnny Jenkins

Join the many other Thurrock residents who are doing their bit to stay green and recycle this Christmas.

Special small electrical recycling drop-off points will be made available throughout the borough to safely and responsibly dispose of items such as kettles, toasters and hairdryers over the festive period. Each collection point will be set up for one day only and will visit Grays, Tilbury, Corringham, Stanford-le-Hope, Orsett, South Ockendon and Aveley between Monday, 6 January and Monday, 14 January 2020.

Plenty of Christmas materials can be easily recycled in your blue bins over the festive period, including Christmas cards, paper wrapping paper, gift tags and washed silver foil. Real Christmas trees can be put in your garden waste bin too – just remember to chop it up to ensure the lid closes – or take it to the Linford Household Waste & Recycling Centre (HWRC). The site will be open as normal from 8am to 4pm, Monday to Sunday, except for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day. It will close at 1pm on Christmas Eve.

Wheeled bin collection dates may be a day or two earlier or later due to the public holidays between Monday, 23 December to Friday, 3 January 2020 – please check revised dates on the council’s website. Please remember to put out your bins no later than 6am on your collection day, and ensure parked cars in streets don’t stop waste and recycling vehicles from getting through.

Cllr Aaron Watkins, Cabinet Member for Environment said:

“With so many extra recyclable materials to get rid of at Christmas, we have helped to make this easy by providing more recycling opportunities such as small electrical drop-off points.

“Thank you to our waste and recycling crews who work hard to clear rubbish and recycling as soon as possible after the big day, and our residents for helping us to continue recycling throughout the festivities.

“We wish you all an enjoyable Christmas and New Year.”
