A cat from Essex is in with a chance of becoming Cats Protection’s ‘Cat of the Year’ at the National Cat Awards, being held at a celebrity-studded event at the Savoy Hotel in London. Organised by the UK’s largest cat charity and sponsored by PURINA®, Cats Protection’s ‘National Cat Awards’ is an annual celebration of the real-life stories of heroism, loyalty and companionship in the feline world. The awards received a record number of entries this year across the five categories – Hero Cat, Most Caring Cat, Furr-Ever Friends, Outstanding Rescue Cat and Purina Better Together – and Jethro from Westcliff-on-Sea cat-fought it out to be named among the 15 fantastic feline finalists. If he wins his category he’ll be in with a chance of becoming the UK’s official “Cat of the Year”.

JETHRO (from Westcliff-on-Sea) is in the Purina Better Together category: Abigail was told she may never live independently after being discharged from a psychiatric hospital following treatment for serious mental health issues. But then Jethro arrived and her life was transformed. When Jethro became ill with diabetes and a brain abscess, it was Abi’s turn to help him recover. Now the pair of them are happy, healthy and loving life together.

Aston spoke to Jethro’s owner Abigail Knight about the awards and also about how Jethro has helped her since she owned Jethro.
