I don’t usually use this blog to go on and on week after week about what tracks are in the show – it could get boring and a glance at my playlist below plus the title of the show should do the job enticing you in ! But this week I thought it would be good to draw your attention to a few tunes featured as there are some real gems with fascinating stories behind them included…
The late Eugene Record was lead singer with the Chi-Lites in the early 70s and in 1977 he cut a track for his imaginatively titled LP “The Eugene Record” which has gone on to be one of THE most saught after rare grooves. I’ve found it impossible to find on a CD or download, so I am glad to share it with you on an MP3 converted from my hugely expensive slice of 12″ vinyl…
The younger dance music fan will have heard and enjoyed several versions of “You Got The Love” over the years and I’m sure many are under the impression that the 1991 released “mash up” pitching the vocals over Frankie Knuckles “Your Love” is the original – WRONG! Nip back to 1986 and a 12″ on Morgan Khan’s legendary “Streetwave” label – hear for yourself around 5.40 on Saturday…
“I’m On My Way” by Dean Parrish featured in the excellent British film “Soul Boy” which was recommended to me by one of the guys at the KTF Soul Club in Stanford Le Hope earlier this year. I don’t usually feature much Northern (a bit before even my time!) but thoroughly enjoyed my visit to their winter event and as there’s another one coming soon,it seemed like the right time to branch out a bit…
And reggae is another musical cousin of soul, I don’t normally play, but if you are ever going to play the sounds of the Carribbean along side the soul, funk and disco tunes, this is the time to do it so I’ve brought back the “Reggae Got Soul” feature for July and picked a few cuts that went hand in hand with the soul boy anthems back in the early 80s, like Dennis Brown’s “Love Has Found It’s Way” from 1982 …
A brand new feature starting this week is “The Old Git’s Jazzy Bit”. I slip into the time honoured cliche of playing an instrumental jazzy-funky track at the end of the show which can be faded easily before the news comes on, but some of the tunes I ‘ve had in mind are just too good to play only a couple of minutes of, so I’ ll be slotting one of the monsters that went down so well at places like the Goldmine or Zero 6, championed by the likes of Robbie Vincent and Greg Edwards on the radio back in the day…
Finally, one of those quirky tracks Ifound on vinyl but couldn’t play on the radio until I recently learnt how to use a USB turntable (!) was inspired by the mega famous Irish rock band U2. They had a song called “War” and at the time the American group War were actively releasing singles and albums, so they thought it would be a good idea to call one of their songs “U2″ !! And what a stormer it is too – here this and all the tunes below, this Saturday from 5pm – 7pm…
