So, how was your Xmas then ? I am not really a big fan of the festive priod, as you may have noticed by the absence of any ‘seasonal soul’ songs on my playlists in December, along with the odd subtle comment between the jazz-funk, soul & disco tunes selected this month ! However, I did rather enjoy The Big Day this year after getting an invitation from my son Nathan and his girlfriend Amy to join them for the annual feast this year…
The catch was that it wasn’t at their nice little flat in Colchester, but with his mum and her partner in Billericay – Xmas dinner with my “ex” , that could be awkward ! If truth be told though, we did split up over 16 years ago and have stayed pretty good friends most of that time, helping each other out on numerous occasions and giving sound parental advice (!) to our young man when needed along the way. There have been the odd social events where we’ve met up too and I remember going to one smashing barbecue at her partner’s house for her birthday when the food was awesome – and that’s where we were heading last Wednesday !
I’d forgotten what a good cook he was and our Xmas dinner was amazing, not a cross word was said and it was also nice to meet up again with some of Nathan’s other relatives who were also present. With my finances at a bit of a low ebb, I was never going to miss this occasion – I am not one to turn down a freebie anyway, in any circumstances, especially where food is concerned ! – but the grub was so good I would have been happy to pay for a meal like that. If I get invited back next year, I might even wear a silly jumper and a stupid hat … or maybe not !
Just before we head into 2025, I have a “70s & 80s Special” lined up for this Monday 30th December and this seems a good time to wish a “Happy New Year” to everyone who reads my ‘Cool Soul’ blogs (apparently people do !) and more importantly listens to my show, either live on Monday or repeated on Saturday. I am really grateful to those who tune in week in, week out, even when on holiday in far flung corners of the world, and in partiuclar those who contribute some brilliant requests, especially Dennis whose legendary “Doubles” have been wonderful this last year.
All are welcome to enjoy some great music and good memories with us, whether ‘hardore regulars’ like Ros & Rich in the “House of Cats on the Kent Side” who’ve been there since day one 14 years ago, or someone who has only recently discovered the show. Maybe you are one of the ‘thousands’ who listen each week but have never raised your head above the parapet to say “hello” – why not make it a New Year’s Resolution to get in touch and join the fun on “The Old Gits Soul Show” page on Facebook ? Whoever you are, however you listen, catch you soon …
