Listen: robotics and coronavirus

19th June 2020
Posted by Aston Avery

In the last few months we have been bombarded from all sides with messages about washing our hands and staying alert wherever we go, it’s no surprise that many of us feel we are living in a dystopian sci-fi novel. Whilst there are certain areas of our lives we realise robotics are used and needed, do we recognise the role robotics already has in the battle to protect ourselves from COVID-19 and future pandemics and how they can continue to do so as the industry evolves?

While 36% of UK adults think PPE manufacturing is the way in which robotics can assist us the most, 33% feel robot or drone deliveries would ensure social distancing guidelines are followed with 28% saying robotics could be used to clean public places.

Now in its 5th year, UK Robotics Week (Monday 22nd – Sunday 28th June), organised by the EPSRC UK Robotics & Autonomous Systems Network, will still be showcasing events virtually to exhibit the true power and benefits that current and future advancements in robotics will provide in the medical sector and otherwise .

Aston spoke to Professor Robert Richardson, chair at EPSRC UK Robotics & Autonomous Systems Network, to discuss about what robotics could be doing to help you and look ahead to Robotics Week.
