Libraries reopening in Thurrock continues with Corringham and Grays

Posted by Aston Avery

Thurrock Council will reopen Corringham Library and Grays Library today (Wednesday 15 July). As with last week’s reopening of Belhus Library, the council will continue to follow Government guidelines around social distancing to keep residents and staff safe.

Both libraries will initially operate under temporary opening hours of 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 1pm on Saturday. Entry to Grays Library will be via Cromwell Road, not the main entrance of the Thameside Complex.

A reduced service will still be in effect, but all three libraries will introduce audiobook loans, Wi-Fi access during browsing time and limited public computer access of 45-minute slots each day from Wednesday 15 July. Customers must pre-book computer use ahead of their visit by phoning the library the day before and they cannot book more than 24 hours in advance. Printing will also be available and payment will need to be made via the self-service machines.

Reservations, photocopying, studying and toilet facilities remain temporarily unavailable. These will be reviewed frequently and offered again when it is safe to do so following Government guidelines.

Cllr Deb Huelin, Cabinet Member for Communities, said:

“We’re pleased that Belhus Library’s reopening was a success and we can now continue our phased reopening at Corringham and Grays.

“Reading is such an enjoyable activity, and we’re encouraging all local children to take up the challenge of reading six books in six weeks by taking part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge ‘Silly Squad’. These books can be ones they have at home, that they’ve borrowed from the library, e-books from BorrowBox or even audiobooks.

“Silly Squad is all about celebrating funny books, happiness and laughter with a crew of fun-loving animals and children can still receive online rewards, play games and earn badges as they discover some new books to enjoy this summer.”

This year’s Summer Reading Challenge will run in Thurrock until Saturday 12 September.
