Britain is a nation lacking in its forty winks, according to a new study which has found that less than half of Brits get over 7 hours of sleep a night, while almost 2 in 5 (39%) only get 5 to 6 hours. The reason behind this sleep shortage appears to be snoring, with 1 in 4 Brits snoring regularly and 40% having experienced snoring at some point.
Whilst snorers are normally the brunt of the joke and we all accept that snoring is a sleep disruptor, Brits are completely unaware of the fact that it actually points to more serious health implications such as sleep apnoea.
The research conducted by the clinically validated sleep testing company, Sunrise, reveals that 53% of Brits are also experiencing feelings of low mood, anxiety, or depression as a result of their lack of sleep due to their own or their partner’s snoring. Not only did it make them feel embarrassed (23%) but it also kept them up at night (64%).
Aston spoke to Dr Dawn Harper medical expert, author and NHS doctor to discuss these new findings and talk about health implications related to snoring.
