Save Our Streams encourages us to waste less water

Coined ‘Britain’s Great Barrier Reef’, chalk streams are beautiful rivers, boasting clear water from underground springs, and are more endangered than both the Bengal tiger and black rhino. These iconic natural gems are now at risk due to the unsustainably high demand for water resulting in groundwater being taken.

Today sees the launch of SOS: Save Our Streams which encourages people in England to waste less water and save our streams. They’re asking the public to save 21 million litres per day – that’s less than 10 litres per person, per day, to make a real difference.

The UK’s largest water-only supplier Affinity Water, who is behind the campaign, is keen to highlight this major environmental issue facing the UK. They say their customers are using 9% (13 litres) more per day than the national average. Customers themselves when polled felt they used less than the national average and more than half said (52%) they visit rivers and streams more than once a month.
