Grassroots sport under threat, as predictions suggest that 25% of clubs will not recover from the pandemic.

There are around 150,000 grassroots sport clubs in the UK and for generations they have been the lifeblood of sport and recreation. Grassroots sport is vital in bringing communities together, keeping young people fit and healthy and creating the next generation of sporting stars. From Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill to Sir Lewis Hamilton, Sir Bradley Wiggins and Alan Shearer, for many professional athletes, grassroots is where it all began.

However, a stark warning has been issued to MPs, after it was predicted that 25% of clubs will not recover from the pandemic. Sporting leaders told a session of the digital, culture, media and sport select committee, they fear both volunteers and the young people who organisations are desperate to reach may have left sport for good
