Urgent rethink needed for careers advice in schools?

With tens of thousands of A level students set to miss out on either their first-choice university places this year or fail to get a place at all, there are calls for a rethink on careers advice in schools.

It comes as the government has today released the latest NEET figures for young people not in education, employment or training. Although the last release of NEET figures indicated a record low, it was preceded by the largest quarterly rise since 2011.

Soaring A Level results for sixth formers meant there have been a record number of applications to university.

According to UCAS, 311,000 UK 18-year-olds had applied for higher education places by its deadline at the end of June, 10% more than the previous record of 281,000 last year.
