Research out today has revealed seven in ten (71 percent) homeowners are hell bent on boasting the best garden on the street this summer. Nearly a quarter (23 percent) are going all out to wow friends and neighbours when they come over for summer BBQs and garden parties with lighting, furniture and a bit of friendly competition.

Overall, a third (31 percent) of Brits say they are competitive with gardening, while 21 percent say that they have become more green-fingered, in a bid to ‘keep up with the Joneses’.

Despite this, almost half (48 percent) admit they have learnt new gardening skills from watching their neighbour maintain their garden, with 59 percent saying that they regularly peer into next door’s garden for inspiration.

But the research by Argos revealed that it’s not just one-up-man-ship that motivates Brits to garden – 38 percent said they loved how being out in the garden boosted their mood, with a further 36 percent admitting that gardening relaxes them. 29 percent say that gardening has improved their mental health.
