Comedian Lucy Porter lifts the lid on the UK’s spice levels

As Brits we love our food and see ourselves as being adventurous when it comes to different cuisines and especially when it comes to eating spicy foods. Vindaloo curries, spicy wings or jerk chicken – you name it, we’ve tried it. However it seems that despite our adventurous nature, we need a little guidance on how best to handle the heat.

A new survey of 2000 adults in the UK has found that 76% of us have been hit with that heat that we weren’t expecting and have received food in a restaurant that was a lot spicier than we imagined. As a result, nearly a third of us (31%) will not eat certain cuisines in a bid to avoid any kind of surprises and almost a quarter (24%) will always order the same dish when eating out to ensure that there’s nothing spicy in it!

The survey by Extra Flamin’ Hot also found that we’re using spicy foods as a way of impressing other people. Almost a fifth of us (18%) have eaten something spicier than we would normally eat in a bid to ‘look tough’ and impress another person!
