Motorsport Update – 27th September

A bumper weekend of motorsport action greeted race fans last week. Below is the the latest news from the world of motorsport in the last week.

F1 Russian GP Top 5 Drivers:

  • 1st: Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes),
  • 2nd: Max Verstappen (Red Bull),
  • 3rd: Carlos Sainz (Ferrari),
  • 4th: Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren)
  • 5th: Vatlteri Bottas (Mercedes)

Race Talking Points

  • Mercedes’s Lewis Hamilton took his 100th career win after timing his pitstop to perfection as he changed to intermediate tyres with three laps to go as he denied polesitter, McLaren’s Lando Norris a fairytale victory after the Brit spun off on a Wet Track on dry tyres,
  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen benifited from all the late drama to finish 2nd after starting 20th on the grid as he keeps his championship hopes alive,
  • Both Aston Martin’s of Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll collided into turn 10 and then Stroll was handed a 10 second time penalty by the stewards after making contact with Alpha Tauri’s Pierre Gasly in the middle sector of the lap which had no change to where he finished in the race which was 11th.
  • George Russell (Williams) finished 10th after qualifying 3rd on the grid.

Indycar Acura GP Of Long Beach:

Top 3 Drivers:

  • 1st: Colton Herta,
  • 2nd: Josef Newgarden,
  • 3rd: Scott Dixon,

Huge congratulations to Alex Palou for winning the 2021 NTT Indycar Series Championship beating home 2 time Indycar Champion Josef Newgarden by 38 points to claim his Maiden Indycar Title.

Indycar will return on the 27th February 2022 on the Streets Of S.T Peterzberg for the 2022 Season. We will keep you updated here on Gateway 97.8 regarding any Indycar developments during the off season regarding driver changes and much more.

Race 3 Top 3 Drivers:

  • 1st: Jake Hill (MB Motorsport Accelerated By Blue Square)
  • 2nd: Dan Lloyd (Adrian Flux Power Maxed Racing)
  • 3rd: Ash Sutton (Laser Tools Racing)

Weekend Talking Points From The BTCC.

  • BTC Racing’s Josh Cook who originally finished 2nd in race 2, was disqualified post race after his Honda Civic Type R failed a post race ride height checks promoting everyone from Excelr 8 Trade Price Cars driver Tom Ingram and below up a place in the finial classification as race results were amended,
  • Toyota Gazzo Racing UK’s Rory Butcher took 2 wins in a row at Silverstone National in race 1 and in race 2 despite having the full 75KG of success ballast onboard his Toyota Corolla in Race 2,
  • Race 2 featured safety car mayhem after drivers like BTC Racing’s Jade Edwards, Cicely Motorsport’s Tom Chilton and some other drivers spun out at the Silverstone National Circuit or had contact with another driver as some of their cars were left in the firing line.

The BTCC returns at Donnington Park on the (9th-10th October 2021) for the penultimate meeting of the season.
