Motorsport Update – 3rd November

5th November 2020
Posted by Gateway 97.8

This week’s motorsport update was dominated by the F1 Emillia Romanga GP at Imola. The Autodromo Internazionale Enzo E Dino Ferrari is located in Imola and played host two the San Marino GP between 1981-2006 and the 1980 Italian GP. It was the first time in 14 years since F1 last visited the classic track.

It was joy for Mercedes who took their 7 consecutive constructors championship breaking Ferrari’s record of 6 consecutive constructors titles after taking a 1-2 finish. Huge congratulations to the Silver Arrows for reaching this incredible milestone especially during these uncertain times.

Emilia Romanga GP Top 5

  • 1st: Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes)
  • 2nd: Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes)
  • 3rd: Daniel Ricciardo (Renault)
  • 4th: Daniil Kyvat (Alpha Tauri)
  • 5th: Charles Leclerc (Ferrari)

Highlights

  • Williams’s George Russell spins behind the Safety Car on cold hard tyres,
  • Red Bull’s Max Verstappen retired from a strong second after suffering a 180 MPH tyre failure at the Villeneuve chicane (Verstappen‘s RB16 was beached in the gravel,
  • VSC Deployed to recover the stricken Renault of Esteban Ocon mid race which helped Lewis Hamilton with his strategy,
  • First lap mayhem at Tosa involving contact between the Alfa Romeo of Antonio Giovinazzi and the Haas of Kevin Magnussen.
  • Pierre Gasly retired from the race early on with a terminal issue for Alpha Tauri as the Frenchmen ended a clean sweep of points finishes. (Gasly also had a very special design for the Emillia Romanga GP as he payed tribute to three time world champion, Ayrton Senna who died after the Brazilian’s Williams FW16 smashed into the barriers at Tamberello at 131 MPH during the 1994 San Marino GP).
