Almost all of us (84%) say we are happy to buy second hand things for ourselves… But would we feel comfortable buying a second hand gift for someone else at Christmas? Almost a quarter of us (22%) say they have bought second hand gifts for friends and family before. However, a quarter of us say that they wouldn’t be happy with a second hand gift for the festive season.

44% of us are suspicious that they have been given a second hand gift before. But is this something we should be worrying about?

Buying and selling pre-loved phones and other items also has a positive impact on the environment. Buying second-hand reduces the huge carbon footprint from producing new mobile phones and other technology and selling stops waste from going to landfill. When it comes to waste a recycling, wouldn’t it be better to recycle gifts that we know someone else would enjoy? According to research from Mazuma Mobile, 88% of us have a drawer where we keep our ‘bits and bobs’ including old mobile phones, mp3 players (24%), jewellery (30%) and old foreign coins (58%).

Aston spoke to Jasmine Birtles, finance expert to discuss whether or not it is OK to buy a second hand gift for Christmas…
