Listen: is digital literacy as important as reading and writing?

When you think of traditional literacy, it is reading, writing, and maths that usually springs to mind. These established literacies are considered pillars to any child’s education in every country across the world. They’re also regarded as essential skills that help children to progress though every aspect of life. But what about the fourth pillar of a child’s education?

A new report launched today from Vodafone and WPI Economics suggests that digital literacy is becoming as important as reading and writing for young peoples’ future life chances. The report calls on the Government, businesses, charity partners and civil society to work together to address the impact of the digital divide.

The report follows the launch of Vodafone and Barnardo’s Discover Digital programme which rolled out across the UK last month and will provide digital skills training to some of the most disadvantaged young people in the UK. As a result of the programme, 3,000 16-24 year olds who are not in education or training will gain practical and useful support including how to apply for jobs and manage money online.

Aston spoke to Tommy McDade, head of Barnardo’s employment, training and skills services.
