Louise Minchin on the generation motivation

A new study of 2,000 Brits, has revealed that a third (33%) of over 50s say they don’t care about what others think about them and so this has made them stronger in achieving their fitness goals, with 32% advising their younger counterparts to prioritise wellbeing over how they look.

While stereotypes may have many believe that the over 50s are on their way to a sedentary lifestyle of gardening and watching daytime TV, a third (34%) say that as they reach this age, they realise they have as much faith in themselves at achieving their goals as they always have. The research, commissioned by David Lloyd Clubs, found that the over 50s are much more active and adventurous with over two thirds (71%) currently having a specific fitness goal and over half (54%) feeling confident that they are likely to achieve that goal.

This increased motivation in exercising for the mind and body instead of simply working out to improve looks has led to only 8% of over 50s saying the portrayal of people their age on social media makes them feel inadequate in comparison to a third (30%) of 18–34-year-olds – something that might come as a surprise for a society who is often so preoccupied with social media.
