It’s a very British trait to never talk about death or money, but new research today reveals that it is causing problems for the ones we love after we’ve gone. According to a new report from the Co-op there is a misunderstanding between what our loved ones plan to do with our money once we’ve gone and what we would really want them to spend it on.

Over a third of those over 50 want their family to use the money they leave behind on things that will give the family a reason to smile and have fun – including a big family holiday to make brand new memories, buying a new car or finally getting the home up to “dream standard” in DIY terms.

Women over the age of 50 are more likely (34%) to want families to ‘make memories’ with their money than their husbands (28%). And those in Scotland are more focussed on families making memories (39%), closely followed by Wales (38%) and the East of England (36%).But, the first thing those who will receive money intend to do is put it away into a bank account for saving (37%). A further 16% would put the money against debt, including paying off part of the mortgage or rent – which would certainly make life easier – but it doesn’t make memories.

Aston spoke to Martin Kemp, TV (Eastenders actor) & music legend (Spandau Ballet) to discuss the findings in further detail.
