National Pizza Day

It may have originated in Italy, but it’s fair to say the humble pizza has become a dinnertime favourite all over the world – not least in the UK, where the average Brit will munch through over 5,000 slices in their lifetime. And it’s no surprise really, given that more than 2 in 5 (43%) name the delicious doughy goodness as their favourite treat or “cheat” meal.

And now, just in time for National Pizza Day, new research by pizza aficionados, Properoni (Pepperoni Made Properly) has finally revealed the country’s favourite topping. It’s unlikely to shock many that it’s the staple of the pizza world, pepperoni, that overwhelmingly takes the top spot, winning a quarter of all votes and scoring 75% higher than its rival Chicken, which comes in at number two (14%). It’s mushrooms that land a perhaps surprising top three spot, as 1 in 10 Brits pick them as their go-to topping.

More than half of UK adults (54%) also know how to make pizza from scratch, indicating a shift towards enjoying more quality, homemade meals. And there’s no better time to get into the kitchen and roll out some fresh dough than during National Pizza Day. A full delicious 24 hours dedicated to eating the dish that so many Brits can’t do without – whether you like a classic pepperoni or something a little more out there.
