Neurodiversity Celebration Week

In light of the estimated 2.6 million individuals in the UK grappling with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), the upcoming Neurodiversity Celebration Week takes on renewed significance as a platform to advocate for better access to diagnosis and support for those affected.

The reality facing many individuals with ADHD in the UK is daunting. Due to NHS backlogs and regional
disparities in GP appointment availability, many endure lengthy waits for a diagnosis, prolonging their access to much-needed support and resources. Faced with these challenges, a significant number resort to self-diagnosis and obtaining medications from the black market, risking their health and well-being in the process.

However, even for those fortunate enough to receive a diagnosis, the journey does not end there. Diagnoses often fall short of the comprehensive assessments necessary to accurately identify and address individual needs. Instead, individuals may be subjected to quick surveys followed by generic prescriptions – potentially leading to misdiagnosis, missed opportunities for support, or inappropriate medication regimes.
