Wannabe wine experts admit they re-gift bottles of wine

Before you know it the Christmas party season will be upon us, and new research has revealed UK wine drinkers are quick to judge people who give boozy gifts, before giving away those bottles they think are inferior. Nearly half (48%) of Brits have admitted re-gifting a bottle of wine, and nearly a fifth (18%) of us have judged someone for the wine they’ve brought to an event like a Christmas party or dinner party.

The survey – from supermarket chain, Lidl – also found that nearly a third (29%) of us had re-gifted wine because they thought it wasn’t good enough to drink themselves. So are we a nation of wine experts and do we really know what we’re talking about when it comes to wine? The research found that over two thirds of Brits admit that when people talk about wine it ‘goes over their head’, and 41% said they get nervous about choosing a bottle of wine for a social occasion.

Aston spoke to Richard Bampfield, independent Master of Wine to discuss the topic of wine quality in the run up to Christmas.
