World Encephalitis Day 2022
World Encephalitis Day, Tuesday 22nd February, announces encephalitis as a “Code Red” condition: an often-devastating neurological condition which can leave survivors with a permanent brain injury.
Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain often caused by infection or a person’s own immune system going wrong.
A staggering 77% of us do not know what encephalitis is, yet in many countries the condition is more common than motor neuron disease, multiple sclerosis and bacterial meningitis. Complicating matters further, new consumer research shows that over half of UK adults can’t pronounce the word ‘encephalitis’, both of which the Encephalitis Society believe are barriers to awareness.
Aston spoke to Dr Ava Easton from the Encephalitis Society.
