Charity calls for urgent change to benefits system

New research has found £23 billion a year is unclaimed in income-related benefits. This significant rise represents a 21% increase from last year with vital support not reaching millions of families who could be on average £2,700 a year better off if they claimed all available benefits.

The findings from national anti-poverty charity Turn2us also revealed that two-thirds of UK adults (64%) find the benefits system confusing and difficult to navigate. Furthermore, nearly half (49%) do not apply for benefits, underscoring the importance of changing perceptions alongside improving system accessibility.

Moreover, Turn2us, an anti-poverty and financial security charity, is actively working to address this issue by helping people navigate this challenging and complex landscape. This includes the use of the Turn2us Benefits Calculator, a user-friendly online tool that sheds light on which benefits are available.

Ros spoke to Michael Clarke, head of information programmes at Turn2us.
