Listen: state of the nation’s teeth

A new report delving into the state of the nation’s teeth has found 1 in 3 people have untreated dental issues, and 3 in 10 have switched to cheaper brands of toothpastes and brushes, due to rising costs impacting households.

In fact, almost a quarter (23%) agree that they don’t clean their teeth enough and more than one in 10 (12%) believe that they have poor dental hygiene – leading to almost a fifth (18%) feeling embarrassed.

Everyone knows that regular brushing is an important part of oral hygiene. The data pinpoints that only 1 in 4 people (23%) brush their teeth once a day, however, nearly two thirds (67%) brush twice daily. In comparison, women brush their teeth for slightly longer than their male counterparts (76 vs 71 seconds); on average we brush our teeth for one minute 13 seconds, shorter than the recommended 2 minutes.

Ros spoke to Dr Surina Seghal a.k.a The Foodie Dentist and Jamie Archer, own brand director at Superdrug.
