Motorists questioning car ownership

On top of being slapped with fees and penalty charges, and petrol and diesel costs rising again, ask anyone who has renewed their car insurance this year and they will tell you their premiums have gone through the roof.  And while it might feel like motorists are being held to ransom at every turn, a new study explores how rising costs are forcing drivers in the UK to change their driving habits.

New data from Consumer Intelligence and The Green Insurer shows motorists are becoming increasingly aware of the impact of driving on the environment and are cutting the miles they drive each year in response.  Indeed, half of all motorists (50%) claim they have cut down on the number of miles they drive each month, with 22% saying they have “substantially” reduced their mileage.

Three in five (61%) state they had made changes to their driving habits in order to help the environment with 50% saying they saw the change as part of a general switch to becoming more environmentally friendly and 48% wanted to reduce carbon emissions and pollution. Other reasons given included walking or cycling more to improve fitness (40%).

Ryan spoke to Paul Baxter, CEO of The Green Insurer.
