I know Gateway 97.8 is a community station primarily serving Basildon and East Thurrock, but I often feature events in my “Recommended Old Gits Nights Out” taking place further afield that listeners to my show in our “home” area could attend quite easily. Usually that means covering other Essex towns such as Romford, Chelmsford and Southend, but over the last year or so I’ve had a steady stream of information about top gigs taking place in the Thanet area of Kent. I think this is a result of knowing a couple of contacts who live in the Margate area now who used to be based on our doorstep at Gateway and last summer I made a point of attending the “Margate Soul Carnival Weekend” – and what an event it was ! I hooked up again with a number of Essex based DJs who were either working there or like me just chilling with the tunes and even bumped into one mate who lives near me just walking down the street ! I hadn’t realized what a big event it was, not just for Kent, but the whole of the south-east, with people coming from places as far afield as Cambridge & Stevenage too. This year looks even bigger with more venues, more DJs and more live acts, so check the details below this week’s playlist, cross your fingers for good weather and BE THERE !!
