Listen: UK coffee week

22nd October 2020
Posted by Aston Avery

It’s UK Coffee Week and 42% of Brits have found themselves drinking more coffee since lockdown. In fact, 23% are drinking 4 cups a day, equating to 112m coffees every 24 hours nationally.

With coffee shops forced to close during lockdown and ongoing restrictions affecting trade, coffee lovers have spent approx. £2bn attempting to replicate the luxury coffee experience from home.

For example, in April John Lewis revealed coffee pod machine sales were up 30% year on year. In the UK alone, demand for Nespresso-compatible pods grew 57% last year and more than 12.6 million UK households now own a pod machine. Coffee capsules now make up one third of the Western European coffee market and with heightened demand, this is on the rise.

Aston spoke to Lex Thornley, sustainable coffee expert from Blue Goose Coffee to discuss more about this and trend and the consequences associated with something as simple as our morning coffee.
