Streaming fatigue hits the UK

20th August 2020

‘At home’ entertainment has played a huge part in our lives this year but after spending hours making do with a small screen, many are of us are more than a little fatigued with streaming services and daytime TV.

Entertainment-starved Brits have wasted nearly 8 days (187 hours) ‘remote conscrolling’ at home in 2020 according to new research by ODEON Cinemas released today ahead of much-awaited blockbuster release Tenet – from award-winning director Christopher Nolan – hitting cinema screens from 26th August. The majority of Brits (76%) admit they’ve become bored of streaming sites and a third (32%) have tried to recreate the cinema experience at home.

However, despite spending so much time choosing what to watch, Brits are being left unsatisfied, with well over three quarters (86%) admitting to abandoning a series or film before the end. When it comes to series abandonment, the second episode is generally the decider as to whether Brits will jump ship and almost half (44%) confess that they aimlessly watch series and programmes just because they are bored.

It’s clear ‘at home’ film fans now feel ‘content fatigue’ and this is leading to some heated debate within the homes of the nation. Around two in 10 (43%) admit to having streaming-induced arguments with people they live with, occurring three times a week on average. Another 42% confess to getting annoyed with people if they ‘double screen’ at home.

Aston spoke to Carol Welch, Managing Director at ODEON and Phil
Clapp, Chief Executive of UK Cinema Association to discuss the research and why the big screen experience is one that can’t be replaced.
