Jennie Bond: Over 70s more at risk of theft during COVID

Financial abuse is not a new problem – this is where someone takes advantage of someone else’s finances for their own gain – but the issue appears to be worsening during the pandemic for those over 70.

A quarter of those over 70 say they have been victims of financial abuse – with the average amount being taken in the region of £10,000. However, most say they felt a sense of shame about the issue and would prefer not to say how much they lost – highlighting a problem that many are simply suffering in silence which allows the abuse to continue.

The report, from GuardianCard, shows that over half (56%) of those aged 70+ say they feel more at risk and fearful during the COVID pandemic. People in the age group say that the most significant concerns around this issue include fear of being taken advantage by family members, friends and carers – the people who should really be taking care of them.
