Thurrock residents urged to behave responsibly outdoors

Following the relaxation of government lockdown restrictions on 1 June, Thurrock Council is reminding residents to take care of the borough’s parks when visiting them.

Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Aaron Watkins, said:

“We’re pleased to see that residents have been making the most of Thurrock’s parks while following social distancing guidelines and keeping two metres away from others.

“While the vast majority have behaved responsibly, which we are thankful for, sadly some have demonstrated a blatant disregard for our environment and left unacceptable levels of litter and rubbish behind.

“Whether you are using our parks or green spaces during the pandemic or not, our message remains the same: please throw your litter in the bins provided or if a litter bin isn’t close by or is at full capacity, take your litter home and dispose of it there.”

From Monday 1 June, the government’s ease in restrictions has meant that people can spend time outdoors, including private gardens and other outdoor spaces, in groups of up to six people from different households but must follow social distancing guidelines. People should not meet friends and family inside their homes.

Play equipment and outdoor gyms in parks and green spaces continue to stay closed for everyone’s safety.

Cllr Watkins added:

“We’ve also had reports of people having barbecues in the evenings in our parks. Barbecues are prohibited in all our parks, including country parks, Coalhouse Fort Park and Langdon Hills Country Park, and are not only a potential fire hazard, but make a mess when any remains are left behind.

“If you drop litter in our borough, we will take action, where necessary, and you could receive an £150 fixed penalty notice.”
