Food for Your Health campaign

In the UK, one in four people are now classified as obese. High cholesterol, blood pressure and blood sugar imbalances are also on the rise and these conditions have devastating effects. Coupled with the ongoing obesity crisis, an increased risk of death from COVID-19 for those who are overweight means it’s time to remember an old but incredibly important message: you are, what you eat.

In response to these worrying trends, the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine are launching a ‘Food for Your Health Campaign.’ As the UK’s largest professional body for registered nutritional therapy practitioners, BANT aims to empower people to make the best food choices and to counter diet-induced metabolic dysregulation with a food-first approach, and how personalised recommendations help to achieve results. Currently, Public Health England are encouraging a renewed focus on health and wellbeing through their Better Health campaign. But this one-size-fits-all approach includes measures such as banning TV adverts and stopping ‘buy one get one free’ on sugary snacks, rather than encouraging the population to actively engage in making healthy food choices.

Aston spoke to Uta Boellinger from BANT (the British Association for Nutrition and Lifestyle Medicine) to discuss the campaign in further detail.
