Angry Billericay residents have demanded a referendum after plans to build 2,010 new homes on the outskirts of the town, which will end up ruining the green belt surrounding it.

From between now and 2031 the local plan document proposes 1,400 homes to the west of Billericay, 430 to the east and 180 to the south, but the exact locations are not yet known, and the building project  is not set to take place until around 2022.

Around 300 of the many angry residents attended a meeting at the arts theatre  at Mayflower high school to show their anger at the plans, and also demand a referendum to take place in Billericay to decide where the new houses should be built. The local residents say that they are worried the two towns will merge in the future if these homes are built, and it will change the way they live.
